“Karaoke for a Class-Conscious Revolution” by Chris Donovan
Are you feeling frustrated by a world that feels increasingly catered to resource-hoarding billionaire? Feeling like you’d like to tell the unapologetic climate disaster-feeling ruling class to take their refineries and shove them where the sun don’t shine? Come on down to Haven Music Hall and sing your heart out about it!
Playing on notions of what environmental scholar Jennifer Peeples calls the ‘toxic sublime’, or things that are beautiful on their surface but represent something ugly and destructive to our environment Donovan presents photographs of toxic sunsets in Saint John and oil tankers on the Bay of Funds, made as a part of his ongoing photographic series The Cloud Factory.
The audience is invited to sing in front of this projection of photographs, alongside scrolling headlines representing environmental crimes committed by the local ruling class, and become part of the installation by singing from a playlist of music about class struggle and environmental justice.
This space is meant to offer catharsis to the psyche of Saint Johners who feel as though they struggle to have their voices heard in the mainstream conversation about our community’s health and our planet’s future amid a barrage of messaging from the ruling class and their resource extracting companies.
“Habitation” by Natt Cann and Caitlin Wilson
Habitation invites attendees of Third Shift to consider the ecological impacts of housing developments amidst the need for human habitation. This interactive installation encourages the viewer to remove and disassemble one of the hundreds of paper homes created by Nat and Caitlin to find hand printed depictions of flora and fauna native to areas designated for housing development but will ultimately lessen the breadth of the installation. Alternatively, participants may choose to keep the home or leave the development untouched entirely. Either action initiates a quiet form of democracy which in turns inflates the schism of ecological degradation and habitation needs.
Natt Cann (he/him) is a Canadian visual artist whose projects of print hone upon the haunting of lands - ideologies and industries keeping afloat Canadian notions of colonial heritage and their subsequent degradations.
Caitlin (she/her) is an ADHD printmaker working in Moncton, New Brunswick; the traditional unceded territory of the Wolastoqiyik and Mi’Kmaq Peoples.
